The men and women that as children experienced and lived through the Great Depression, entered the service and put on the military uniform of the United States and shipped off to war to fight the Nazi's in Europe or their Axis Allies in the Pacific against the Japanese. When called they answered and did what as asked. For them there was no question about what they were doing and they knew what they were doing was right.
Meet PFC Ernest Frost, a man who experienced what we have only read about in books when it came to the subject of World War 2. Listen to his stories and experience a time when America was still youthful and innocent in many ways.

Served with 3rd Division 7th Army European Theater World War II
Enlisted December 17th 1943 and Honorably Discharged on January 31st 1946
On March 25, 1943 he was drafted in the United States Army. He received his basic training in Camp Croft, South Carolina for 17 weeks. He was shipped out with the famous 7th Infantry 3rd Division to Europe. There he saw combat in Italy, France, and Germany from 1944-1945. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, The Valley of Purple Hearts and many small skirmishes along the way primarily as a scout and sniper. He received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart with clusters from two wounds received from mortar fire and an anti-tank shell as well as the French Croix de Guerre with palm.

May 30, 2011 – Don't Give Up The Ship!
During the first year of the War of 1812, the young United States Navy won several stunning victories in ship-to-ship battles against British Royal Navy warships. This was a slap in the face to the superior British Fleet. An American officer contributing to these successes was James Lawrence. On 24 February 1813, Lawrence’s sloop, the Hornet, devastated the HM Brig-Sloop Peacock by nearly sinking her in 15 minutes. Lawrence as a result of this action was promoted to the rank of Captain and given command of the frigate Chesapeake.
The Chesapeake was then assigned by the Navy Department was the seizure and destruction of British transports seeking Canadian ports. When Lawrence arrived in Boston on 20 May, 1812 a British warship, the frigate Shannon, remained in view blockading the harbor. The Shannon with a more experienced crew, better gunnery was a slight advantage to the Chesapeake but Captain Lawrence engaged with the enemy regardless. After a hard-fought, bloody action lasting only a quarter of an hour, the American frigate struck her colors to Shannon. The defeat gained Lawrence fame and honor as a fallen naval hero. The words of Lawrence’s last spoken command soon became a battle cry throughout the American fleet, most famously as the motto emblazoning Oliver Hazard Perry’s battle flag at the Battle of Lake Erie: “Don’t Give Up The Ship.”
On Memorial Day we remember American heroes like Captain Lawrence aboard the sloops Hornet and Chesapeake and those like him that fight in the defense of this country and the preservation of its freedoms. American history is filled with testaments to the determination of never giving up, taking the beachhead like our fathers and grandfathers did on D-Day, June 6th, 1944 or the launch of 6 Army B-25s from the flight deck of the USS Hornet to strike the Japanese home islands in one of the most daring raids in the history of warfare -- the "Doolittle Raid". She also participated in the greatest naval military battle, Midway. Later the USS Hornet, one of the most decorated ships of the US Navy assisted NASA in the flawless recovery of the Apollo 11 space capsule and the first men to walk on the moon. A few months later, she also recovered the Apollo 12 capsule and its all-Navy crew in 1969.
Captain Lawrence aboard the Hornet in the days of Wooden Ships and Iron Men and his iconic leadership transcends into the modern day and still carries the same message whether aboard the Chesapeake or USS Hornet or even our own country, “Don’t Give Up The Ship.”

Many of these same soldiers served during a period of American military history called Desert Shield and Desert Storm and paticipated in an epic military tranformation of Iraq and the Middle East.
The phrase "the mother of all..." was at that time popularized by then President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, after the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Bulletins to Iraqi citizens advised them to prepare for an invasion and "the mother of all battles" promised in a speech "the mother of all battles" if the US-led coalition forces attempted to evict his army of occupation from Kuwait. The phrase "mother of all battles" in this instance was a translation of the Arabic expression Umm al-Ma'arik. This is a common trope in Arabic public rhetoric. As Saddam's audience would have understood, it refers to the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah in AD 637, when an Arab army defeated the Persians.
