Navy Hospitalman 3rd Class Robert A Protzman II
First day of Bootcamp Jan 1984, our company was awarded "Captain's Trophy" or Brigade. Went to NTC San Diego for Seaman Apprenticeship School or Deckape training. Then got orders for USS Gridley CG-21. Did several RIMPACS (rim of the pacific) with Japanese Navy. Tired of stripping paint, painting and swabbing decks I became a Corpsman Striker and spent the rest of my time as a Corpsman. After a couple of months in stand down, we deployed for WESTPAC, port included Hawaii (again) Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Seychelles, Africa, Australia, and then PI, Hawaii and home. While on WESTPAC we had many encounters with Russians. While stationed in the Persian Gulf we were attacked almost daily by F4 Phantoms with Harpoon missles trying to sink Oil Tankers that were bound for the US. It was known as the Tanker Wars. We spent 118 days on station. After 2 yrs on the Gridley with a some TAD on other ships (USS Carl Vinson CVN-70, USS Roanoke AOE-7) I was transferred to NSHS (Naval School of Health Sciences) Graduated Corpsman School at the top of my class, then was moved to ICU after a year on the critical care floor my chief from the Gridley offered me a job to work with him again in Orthopedics (he was transferred to there). Worked in Ortho for year, and made HM3 6 months before getting out. Now I am an active member of our American Legion Post.
