USS BONHOMME RICHARDS

An amphibious assault ship, the USS Bonhomme Richard (LDH-6) was named in honor of John Paul Jones' famous frigate (or warship), which he had named the French language equivalent of "Good man Richard" in honor of the pen name used Benjamin Franklin to write Poor Richard's Almanac.

Also called the "Revolutionary Gator" and the "Bonnie Dick" it is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, meaning that it is capable of transporting almost the full strength of a USMC MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit), and landing them in hostile territory via landing craft for helicopters. 

The USS Bonhomme Richards has been in recent active service since early 2012, weighing in at 40,500 tons and 844 feet in length with top speed of 20 knots and a range of 9,500 nautical miles. She carries with her 2 NATO Sea Sparrow systems, 2 Rolling Airframe Missile systems, 2 Phalanx CIWS, 3 - 25mm Mk 38 cannons, 4 - .50 cal M2HB machine guns, 42 CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters, 5 AV-8B Harrier attack plans, 6 ASW helicopters and over 1,800 troops on board. That's pretty hard core!

Her motto, "I have not yet begun to fight" certainly exemplifies her readiness for combat. Currently in active service in Sasebo, Japan, she is not one to back down. Having served in several operations including Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, she aided these missions with offloading Marines and gear, transport helicopters, vehicles and stood by offshore in key position ready to launch AV-8B Harrier strike aircraft.

A decorated warship, she was been been given numerous awards since 1998 like the Green "H" for Force Wellness Award, the CNO Safety Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Engineering Excellence Award, Ney Award, Battle Efficiency Award, Maritime Warfare Excellence Award and many more.
