We know you, our Vietnam Veterans, have been to hell and back, witnessing what must have been the most horrible images any human being should ever have to see. The prolonged struggle between the nationalist forces attempting to unify Vietnam under a communist government and the United States attempting to prevent it from happening engaged you all in a war many viewed as lost before it was even over. We've learned a lot from your sacrifices and bravery while you fought in Vietnam and only wish that your return home were a more welcome event.
Of the 9,087,000 military personnel that served on active duty during the official Vietnam era from August 5, 1964 to May 7, 1975, 2,0709,918 of those were Americans. You, our American Vietnam Veterans represent 9.7% of your generation. Two hundred and forty of you, our American Vietnam Veterans, were awarded the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. The first man to lose his life for his country in Vietnam was James Davis, in 1961. Today, there is a station in Saigon bearing his name in his honor.
When we looked at the number of you that lost your lives or wounded practically to full immobility we are astounded at the numbers. There were 58,148 Americans who lost their lives in Vietnam,61% of whom were under 21 years of age with 17,539 leaving behind a spouse. About 75,000 that survived were severely disabled, and 23,214 of you returned home 100% disabled, 5,283 of you lost limbs, 1,081 sustained multiple amputations and as of January 15th, 2004, there are 1,875 Americans still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.
And yet with statistics like these mentioned above, 91% of you say you are glad you served, 97% of you were honorably discharged and 74% of Vietnam Veterans say they would serve again, even if the outcome is grim.
To further commend you, our Vietnam Veterans, did you know that 87% of American hold Vietnam Veterans in high esteem and 85% of you have successfully transitioned to civilian life despite the horrors of war and near starvation you have endured? That is truly commendable and we need more heroes like you.
